Ons Jabeur beat Belinda Bencic to win the Charleston Open on Sunday. This is the maiden title for the 2023 season for the Tunisian. Jabeur wrapped up a 7-6(6), 6-4 win after an hour and 59 minutes of play. Earlier, Bencic had to pull double duty on Sunday after having to complete her postponed semi-final against Jessica Pegula.
The Swiss who won the title in the WTA 500 event in 2022 led Pegula by a set but was trailing the American 2-4 in the second set tie-break. When play resumed on Sunday, Bencic came back into the match to finish a 7-5, 7-6(5) win for herself.
Charleston Open: How did Ons Jabeur do?
In the final that began barely minutes after the outcome of the second semi-final was decided, Bencic showed no signs of tiredness as she raced ahead with a break in the first set.
For Jabeur, it seemed like déjà vu as she found herself in a similar situation to her semi-final against Daria Kasatkina on Saturday. And as against Kasatkina, Jabeur fought back from down a break successfully.
Bencic was unable to serve out the set in the 10th game and even had a handful of set points for herself on the Swiss’ service game in the 12th game of the set. However, she wasn’t able to make good of any. In the tie-break, Bencic had a couple of set points but Jabeur staved them both off.
Eventually, Jabeur needed six set points to pocket the set and go up in the match. The second set saw Jabeur take control over the momentum early and secure two breaks of serve. But Bencic was able to get one break back and even had break back points in the 10th game as Jabeur served for the match.
This time around, Jabeur ensured there were no further comebacks as she notched the win. Bencic had 12 more winners than Jabeur’s 24. However, she also had 13 more unforced errors to the latter’s 17 that saw her through the match convincingly.
The 2023 Charleston Open final was a rematch of the 2022 final but while Bencic won the title that time, it was Jabeur’s turn to lift the trophy this time. This title’s also the fourth the world’s fifth best-ranked player’s won in her career so far. Photo Credit: Ons Jabeur Twitter
