Lucia Bronzetti upset second seed Sloane Stephens in their semi-final encounter at the Rabat Grand Prix on Friday. The Italian clinched a 6-1, 6-1 win for herself in a match that lasted a minute longer than an hour. Bronzetti won 74% of her first-serve points and 70% of her second-serve points.
She also won 54% and 67% points on return on the American’s first and second serves respectively. Both players had 11 winners apiece but Stephens had 14 more unforced errors than the Italian’s eight. Bronzetti also converted five of six break points she had on Stephens’ serve and didn’t face any threats on her serve throughout the proceedings.
Rabat Grand Prix: Julia Grabher's noteworthy milestone
Julia Grabher will be Bronzetti’s opponent in the title round. The Austrian defeated Argentina’s Julia Riera in their semi-final. Grabher needed three sets and two hours and 19 minutes before posting a 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(6) victory.
The Rabat Grand Prix final’s the first time Julia Grabher’s made it this far in a WTA event. Meanwhile, Lucia Bronzetti’s contesting the WTA final for the second time in her career. For both players, as such, winning the Rabat title would mean another career first.
