Ons Jabeur made her way into the third round of the French Open on Thursday. The seventh seed from Tunisia wrapped up a 6-2, 6-3 win over Frenchwoman Oceane Dodin in an hour and 11 minutes. This is the third time in her career that Jabeur’s reached this far at Roland Garros.
Jabeur won 78% of her first-serve points to her opponent’s 55%. She also won 14 of 25 points on return on Dodin’s second serve. The 28-year-old was able to angle her shots well for which Dodin had no answers to give.
Jabeur finished the match with 25 winners to Dodin’s 15 and had just 16 unforced errors to the latter’s 27. Dodin did convert two of three break points on Jabeur’s serve but also conceded five break points on her own serve.
Serbian qualifier Olga Danilovic will be Jabeur’s next opponent. Danilovic won 6-2, 7-5 against Jasmine Paolini. If Jabeur were to win the match it would mean equalling her best result in the French Major. Earlier, in 2020 and 2021 Jabeur reached the fourth round in Paris.
French Open: Coco Gauff, Bianca Andreescu emphasise their tennis clout
Meanwhile, Coco Gauff, who’s seeded one place above Jabeur this year at the Grand Slam, also made her way into the third round. The sixth seed defeated Julia Grabher by the same score-line as Jabeur’s (6-2, 6-3) in 68 minutes.
The 19-year-old, who’s returning as a finalist here, hit 15 winners to her Austrian opponent’s nine and had 19 unforced errors to the latter’s 27. Gauff converted six of 10 break points on the Rabat finalist’s serve while saving two of five break points she faced.
Gauff now faces a tough opponent in Mirra Andreeva next. Meanwhile, Bianca Andreescu took 69 minutes to complete a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Emma Navarro. This is the first occasion that the Canadian’s gone into the round-of-32 of the French Open.
Lesia Tsurenko will be Andreescu’s next opponent. The Ukrainian reached the third round after her opponent, American Lauren Davis retired mid-match. Tsurenko was leading 6-3, 1-0 at the time. Photo Credit: Ons Jabeur Twitter
