Rothesay Classic: Barbora Krejcikova reaches pre-quarters on a day marred with upsets

Top seed Barbora Krejcikova moved into the round-of-16 of the Rothesay Classic on Wednesday. The Czech beat Spanish qualifier Cristina Bucsa 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 21 minutes. Krejcikova won 77% of her first-serve points to Bucsa’s 59%.

The world no. 12 will play fellow Czech, qualifier Tereza Martincova in the second round. Martincova came through against Bulgarian lucky loser Viktoriya Tomova, 6-1, 6-3 in an hour and 20 minutes. Another lucky loser, Rebecca Marino, meanwhile, fared better in her first-round match against a qualifier.

The Canadian defeated Chinese qualifier Xinyu Wang 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-3 in two hours and 39 minutes to reach the round-of-16. Marino will play Emina Bektas next.

Rothesay Open: Seeds tumble out

The American qualifier got past seventh seed Shuai Zhang in their opening-round match, 6-4, 6-3 in 68 minutes.
