Bad Homburg Open: Iga Swiatek sets maiden grass-court QF appearance!

Iga Swiatek moved into the quarter-finals of the Bad Homburg Open on Wednesday. The world no. 1 and the tournament top seed got past Jil Teichmann 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 19 minutes in their second-round match. Swiatek won 78% of her first-serve points and 43% of her second-serve points.

She had a better time returning Teichmann’s second serves as she won 81% points in that category. Both players faced five break points each. Swiatek saved the quintet while converting four of the five that came her way on her opponent’s serve.

Swiatek won 60 points for the match of which 14 were winners. After her win, Swiatek said, “I think it's my first grass-court quarterfinal, so pretty excited. For sure, today was a good day. I was happy with my performance.

I felt like I had everything under control and that's great”. Indeed, this is the first time in her career the 22-year-old made it to the quarter-finals of a tournament on grass on the WTA Tour. The former junior Wimbledon champion will now play ninth seed Anna Blinkova for a spot in the semi-finals.

Bad Homburg Open: Mayar Sherif ousted

Blinkova won her round-of-16 match against Leylah Fernandez 7-5, 6-2 in an hour and 35 minutes. Blinkova faced four break points, two in each set. She failed to save both break points in the first set while successfully doing so in the second.

She also converted five break points in total on Fernandez’s serve. Katerina Siniakova completed a 6-2, 6-4 win over Evgeniya Rodina in the second round. The Czech will face second-seeded Liudmila Samsonova next. Lastly, Lucia Bronzetti posted an upset over fourth seed Mayar Sherif in their second-round clash.
