In what was her first-ever WTA finale, Xiyu Wang lifted the first-ever title of her career. On Saturday, Wang was crowned titlist, at home, at the Guangzhou Open. Wang took an hour and 20 minutes to wrap up a 6-0, 6-2 victory over the highest-seed in the tournament, Magda Linette.
Both players won around 45% of their second-serve points. But the key difference in the match was in how well they did on their first-serve points. Wang put in 29 points on her first serve and lost just seven of these. The Pole, on the other hand, landed in 36 first-serve points but won only 14 of these.
Wang created 13 break point chances for herself on her higher-ranked rival’s serve and converted six of these. She did, however, fail to save the only break point she faced in the proceedings.
Guangzhou Open: Xiyu Wang's a WTA winner now!
For the match, Wang won 59 points of which, 28 were winners. Wang’s unforced error count stood at 15. Linette finished with 20 winners fewer than her opponent and four fewer unforced errors than the latter. Speaking after the win, Wang said, “I wanted a title from the first day, even when I started tennis.
It was really a dream for me. I think there is going to be bigger tournaments, tougher matches waiting for me, and I'm just trying my best like I did this week”. Now, following the Guangzhou Open title, Xiyu Wang will rise to the 58th place in the WTA rankings, on Monday, 25th September. She’ll be nine places removed from her career-high of no. 49 in the world.
