Iga Swiatek ousted Maria Sakkari to lift her second Indian Wells title and joined the great Serena Williams in achieving one impressive feat in the desert. Two years ago, Swiatek won her first Indian Wells title after dismantling Sakkari 6-4 6-1 in the 2022 final in the desert.

On Sunday, Swiatek and Sakkari met again in the same tournament and the same phase. Again, the outcome was the same with almost the identical result as the Pole crushed the Greek 6-4 6-0 this time.

By claiming her second Indian Wells title, 22-year-old Swiatek joined Williams and Kim Clijsters on the list of players who have managed to win multiple titles in the desert before turning 23, via OptaAce.

In 2001, Williams was 19 when she won her second Indian Wells title but then didn't play at the tournament again until 2016 due to alleged racial abuse. On the other side, Clijsters was also 22 when she won her second Indian Wells title.

How Swiatek beat Sakkari for the 2024 Indian Wells title?

Top-seeded Swiatek got off to a great start to the match, claiming an early break for a 3-0 lead.

Down early, No. 9 seed Sakkari managed to respond and quickly get the break back to tie the first set to three games apiece. But in the key moments of the first set - with Swiatek leading 5-4 and Sakkari serving to stay in the opener - the Pole earned three consecutive set points on the Greek's serve and realized her third to win the first set.

Losing the first set in such a devastating way deeply impacted Sakkari, whose game completely shut down as Swiatek won the second set without a dropped game to seal the 2024 Indian Wells title in a very impressive way.

Now, Swiatek has 19 titles in her collection - eight titles from the WTA 1000 - and two titles in 2024.

Previously, Swiatek won a WTA 1000 tournament in Doha in February. Next up for Swiatek is Miami, where she will also try to win her second title.
