World No. 1 Iga Swiatek has just created a miraculous comeback to beat former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka 7-6 (1) 1-6 7-5 in the French Open second round.

After edging out Lucia Bronzetti in a tight first-round match, Osaka said she would be “honored” to play Swiatek in the second round, Osaka ultimately got her wish and came inches away from achieving her biggest win since starting her comeback.

But with Osaka leading 5-3 in the second set, Swiatek managed to save a match point - break back Osaka - and keep her hopes of a French Open three-peat alive.

For Osaka, not realizing a match point on her serve was too much to overcome as Swiatek went on win five games in a row from 2-5 down and set up a third-round meeting against either Marie Bouzkova or Jana Fett.

How Swiatek came back to beat Osaka?

Early in the first set, Swiatek missed out on a break point but also saved a break point in the following game. After a couple of missed break point chances, Swiatek earned the first break of the match in the eighth game but Osaka got that break back in the eighth game to tie the opener to four games apiece.

Then, Osaka saved a break point in the ninth game but also didn’t realize her first set point on Swiatek’s serve in the following game. The set then went into a tie-break, where Swiatek won the opening four points before opening a 6-1 lead and realizing her first set point to win a tight opener.

After losing a tight first set in a heartbreaking way, Osaka impressively bounced back with back-to-back breaks and a 4-0 second-set lead. With Osaka leading 5-1 and Swiatek serving to stay in the second set, the Japanese earned her third break of the set to force a decider.

After easily winning the second set, Osaka also started the third set with an early break and a 3-0 lead.

Serving for the match at 5-3, Osaka missed out on a match point as Swiatek managed to get the break back. Then, Swiatek served out the 10th game before breaking Osaka again for a 6-5 lead and then serving out for the match in the following game.
