2016 seems to have started on the right foot for Sloane Stephens. The 22-year old secured a place into ASB Classic’s semifinals, defeating Naomi Broady 7-6 6-3. Not an easy task for former Australian Open semi-finalist, who had to save two set points in the first set.
Stephens also found herself down a break in the second set, but managed to recover and closed it out on her first match point after 1 hour and 38 minutes.
In the top half of the draw, Julia Goerges and Tamira Paszek qualified for tomorrow’s semifinals.
The German fought back against promising Nao Hibino, winning 6-7 6-2 6-4. After losing the first set because of a terrible start in the tie-break, the 27-year old took full control of the match and didn’t give any chance on serve to her opponent.
Paszek came out as winner in the match between qualifiers, overcoming Kirsten Flipkens by 6-4 6-7 6-3.
A tough match that lasted almost three hours, in which the Austrian showed great attitude. Former Wimbledon quarter-finalist, delivered it in the third set, where she was up 5-0. From that moment on, Tamira had a little black-out, as she allowed her opponent to recover until 5-3 and only closed the match out at her 7th match point.
In the last match of the day, seed no. 3 Caroline Wozniacki easily reached semifinals, losing just a game against Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru. The Dane controlled the match from the very beginning and finished with an easy 6-1 6-0 in just 53 minutes.
