Tennis- Top seed Venus Williams has won first round match in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 whereas third seed Yulia Putintseva has booked her place in the Quarterfinals. There was one big upset on the day as the fourth seed Zarina Diyas was stunned by Russia's Elizaveta Kulichkova. 7-time Grand Slam Champion Venus Williams was up against local wildcard Pei-Chi Lee, who is ranked 517 positions below World No.12 Williams in WTA Rankings.
The American had to face some early resistance in the first set as 21-year Lee had two break points in the first game. Williams managed to hold that serve and then broke Lee to go 3-0 up. After that Williams held all the service games easily and took the first set 6-3. In the second set both players went level until 2-2 but then Williams broke twice and won four games in a row to seal the match in just 57 minutes. Her second round opponent will be Urszula Radwanska, the younger sister of World No.5 Agnieszka Radwanska.
Venus leads Urszula 2-1 in head-to-head record. Third seed Yulia Putintseva was up against World No.184 Japanese qualifier Miyu Kato. The Kazakh was broken twice in the first set but she broke her opponent three times to take the first set 6-4.
In the second set Putintseva was winning easily as she was 5-0 up but Kato staged a miraculous comeback and won 7 games in a row to take the second set 7-5 and forced the match into a deciding set. Putintseva got the control back in the third set and won it 6-0 to go through to last 8 where she will face the winner of Stefanie Vögele and Saisai Zheng. Russia's World No.95 Elizaveta Kulichkova caused the upset when she ousted the fourth seed Zarina Diyas in 3 sets.
The first set was close and went level until 5-5 when the Russian got a break and won the first set 7-5. Diyas was dominant in the second set and she won it 6-0 to level the match. The Kazakh was leading 4-2 in the third set but Kulichkova won 4 games in a row to seal the match.
In the last first round match of the tournament, Magda Linette was an easy winner against China's Yafan Wang in straight sets 7-5 7-5. The battle between Latvia's World No.108 Anastasija Sevastova and World No.103 Donna Vekic lasted for more than two hours and they were tied at 1 set all and 5 games all when the Latvian stepped up and won two games in a row to move into the Quarterfinals.
