Claro Open Colsanitas has begun with some big surprises. Seed number 2, Brazilian Teliana Pereira, was sent out by Argentinean Catalina Pella 3-6 6-3 7-6. An extremely tough match won by the world number 274 in almost 2 hours and a half.
Pereira had an easy start, leading up in the first set, yet finding herself down in the second, with her opponent pushing hard to bring the match to a decider. In the final set the qualifier went up of a break twice before being forced to a third set tie-break.
Here the Argentinean pulled out a consistent performance and secured a spot into the second round winning by 7 points to 3. Fifth seed Irina Falconi opened her campaign with a convincing straight sets victory over Colombian wild-card Emiliana Arango, losing just one game in 47 minutes for a consistent 6-0 6-1 win.
The American will face in the second round French Sherazad Reix, who outplayed US qualifier Sanz Marand 6-3 7-6. Anna Tatishvili and Silvia Soler-Espinosa have also reached the second round, safely defeating Turkish Ipek Soylu 6-4 6-3 and Czech Tereza Martincova 6-2 7-5.
