Tennis- Former World No.1 Venus Williams, Ana Ivanovic and 10th seed Lucie Safarova reached the second round safely whereas three seeded players Sara Errani, Elina Svitolina and Karolina Pliskova were knocked out in the first round of the 2016 Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome.
35-year-old Venus Williams had first reached final here 18 years back in 1998 and won the tournament the following year. She was up against fellow American CoCo Vandeweghe and did not face much trouble as she won in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
Another former World No.1 and 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic was also winner in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 against Russia's Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. This was Ivanovic's eighth win in nine meetings against the Russian.
10th seed Lucie Safarova faced 2010 French Open Champion Francesca Schivone, who had entered as a wildcard. Safarova took revenge of her previous 3 losses against Italian on the clay and won in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. 2014 Rome finalist Sara Errani was knocked out in 3 sets 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 by Great Britain's qualifier Heather Watson. She will face Barbora Strycova next, who defeated another Italian wildcard Karin Knapp 6-2, 6-2. Puerto Rico's qualifier Monica Puig also needed 3 sets to stun the 15th seed Elina Svitolina 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.
