Tennis- Former champions Ekaterina Makarova, Elena Vesnina and former top 10 players Eugenie Bouchard, Andrea Petkovic have booked their places in the second round of the Aegon Internation WTA Tournament in Eastbourne. 2014 Wimbledon finalist Bouchard faced American qualifier Varvara Lepchenko, who she had beaten in straight sets when they met three years back.
Once again Canadian won in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 to book a clash with 15th seed Irina-Camelia Begu. It was a bad day for local players, as Britain's Heather Watson lost in straight sets against 2013 Eastbourne champion Vesnina.
The Russian will meet the third seed Belinda Bencic next. Wildcard Naomi Broady also lost in staight sets against qualifier Monica Puig 6-1, 6-1. Puig will be up against another qualifier Ana Konjuh next. Another British wildcard Tara Moore was beaten in straight sets 7-5, 6-4 by Germany's Andrea Petkovic, who will face 13th seed Sara Errani for a place in last 16. 2010 Eastbourne champion Ekaterina Makarova needed 3 sets to beat Chinese lucky loser Saisai Zheng 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 and will face second seed Roberta Vinci in second round.
