Tennis- Second seed Irina-Camelia Begu, third seed Monica Puig, sixth seed Timea Babos and unseeded Ana Bogdan reached the semifinals of the Brasil Tennis Cup WTA Tournament in Florianopolis on Wednesday. Ana Bogdan, who had stunned the former World No.1, top seed Jelena Jankovic in the previous round, secured a straight sets 6-3, 6-3 win against Ukrainian lucky loser Lyudmyla Kichenok to reach the semifinals.
In the semifinals her opponent will be sixth seed Timea Babos, who took on fourth seed, 19-year-old Latvian Jelena Ostapenko. Ostapenko had beaten Babos in 3 sets when they met in Katowice earlier this year. Once again Ostapenko took the first set 6-4 and Babos levelled the match by taking the second set 6-3. Babos kept the momentum going in the third set and won it 6-2 to go through to the last 4. Begu, who is highest ranked player left in the draw, took on 21-year-old Japanese player Nao Hibino, who is ranked 84 in the WTA Rankings. Begu won it easily in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 to set up a last four clash with third seed Monica Puig, who defeated another Japanese, eighth seed Naomi Osaka in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
