US OPEN WOMEN'S SINGLES- Venus Williams, Radwanska, Halep and Pliskova book spots in the third round

Tennis- Fifth seed Simona Halep, sixth seed Venus Williams, 10th seed Karolina Pliskova and 31st seed Timea Babos booked their spots in the third round of the US Open women's singles event on Thursday before rain stopped play in New York.

Halep played former World No.5 Lucie Safarova, who she led 3-1 in head to head record and had won last 3 meetings against her. Once again Halep dominated the Czech player and broke her twice to go 3-0 up. Safarova bounced back and got both breaks back to level at 3-3 but Halep broke her two more times to take the first set 6-3. In the second set Safarova broke the Romanian twice but Halep broke back on both occasions.

Safarova served to stay in the match at 4-5 when Halep broke her again and took the second set 6-4 to reach last 32. For a place in the last 16, she will have to beat Hungary's Timea Babos, who defeated Netherlands' Richel Hogenkamp 6-2 6-4. Former World No.1, 2-time US Open champion Venus Williams secured a straight sets 6-2, 6-3 win over Germany's Julia Goerges to reach last 32, where she will face the 26th seed Laura Siegemund, who defeated USA's Nicole Gibbs in straight sets 6-3, 7-5.

36-year-old Williams has reached third round of US Open for the 14th time. Fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska faced tough time against Great Britain's Naomi Broady in the first set as she was 2-5 down and although Radwanska fought back to level at 5-5, she had to save 3 set points in tie-break before winning the tie-break 11-9.

In the second set Radwanska was broken in the first game but she broke back three games later. Another break in the eighth game gave her the second set 6-3 and a place in the third round, where she will face 25th seed Caroline Garcia, who came back from one set down to beat Katerina Siniakova of Czech Republic 4-6 6-4 6-4. 10th seed Karolina Pliskova also joined Halep and Williams in third round as she defeated Paraguay's Montserrat Gonzalez 6-1, 7-5 and will face 17th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova next, who defeated France's Kristina Mladenovic 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(5).
