Tennis- Seventh seed Roberta Vinci, eighth seed Madison Keys, 13th seed Johanna Konta, 14th seed Petra Kvitova and former World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki have reached the round of 16 of the 2016 US Open Championships. The only American left in bottom half of the draw, eighth seed Madison Keys faced 18-year-old Japanese player Naomi Osaka, who was making her first appearance at US Open and was vying to reach fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time.
Keys took the first set 7-5 but Osaka levelled the match at one set a piece by taking the second set 6-4. Osaka got a break in the first game of the third set and was fastly moving towards the biggest win of her career as she got another break and was 5-1 up.
But Keys made a terrific comeback to level the third set at 5-5. The set was forced into a tie-break, which Keys won 7-3 to book her place in the fourth round. Keys will face former World No.1 and 2-time US Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki next, who defeated Romania's Monica Niculescu in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. Seventh seed Roberta Vinci gave a bagel, 6-0 to Germany's Carina Witthoeft but dropped the second set 5-7 as it was levelled at one set all.
The Italian, finalist of last year took the third set 6-3 to reach last 16. For a place in the Quarterfinal Vinci will face Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko, who reached fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time by beating 12th seed Dominika Cibulkova in 3 sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. 14th seed, 2-time Wimbledon Petra Kvitova registered a straight sets 6-3, 6-4 win over 22nd seed, Ukraine's Elina Svitolina and will take on the winner of second seed Angelique Kerber and American teenager Catherine Bellis. 13th seed, Australian Open semifinalist Johanna Konta also reached fourth round with a straight sets 6-2, 6-1 win over 24th seed, 2014 US Open Quarterfinalist Belinda Bencic. She will face Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova next, who defeated Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko 6-4, 6-1.
