US OPEN WOMEN'S SINGLES- Serena Williams takes another step closer to open era world record

Tennis: World No.1 Serena Williams moved another step closer towards open era record of 23 Grand Slams as she eased past Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova in straight sets to reach Quarterfinals of the US Open but Serena's elder sister Venus Williams bowed out after losing a thrilling 3 set encounter against 10th seed Karolina Pliskova. Fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska was stunned in straight sets by unseeded Croatian Ana Konjuh. Serena Williams faced World No.52 Shvedova, who she had beaten in all four previous meetings.

They had also met in US Open third round three years back when Williams had won in straight sets. Once again it was no problem for Serena as she broke the Kazakh player in her first service game. Serena won 92% points on her first serve in the first set and did not face any break point.

She got another break in the eighth game to take the first set 6-2. In the second set Serena was even more dominant on her serve as she served 6 aces, total 11 in the match. She did not face a break point in whole match, winning 94% first serve points in second set. A break in the sixth game was enough to give her the second set 6-3, and a place in the US Open Quarterfinals for the 14th time, for the 46th time in Grand Slams in total.

Serena will face World No.5 Simona Halep next, who secured a straight sets win over 11th seed Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 7-5. On the other hand, Serena's elder sister Venus Williams, another former World No.1 and 2-time champion of US Open, failed to reach her 37th Grand Slam Quarterfinal by going down in a very close encounter.

Venus took the first set 6-4 against 10th seed Karolina Pliskova and was one set away from reaching her 12th US Open Quarterfinal. But Pliskova levelled the match by taking the second set 6-4. In the third set both players fought very hard and at the end it was decided by tie-break, which Pliskova won 7-3 to reach her first ever Grand Slam Quarterfinal.

Her opponent in the last 8 will be unseeded Croatian Ana Konjuh, who knocked out the fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. FULL RESULTS ON NEXT PAGE Also Read: US OPEN WOMEN'S SINGLES- Serena Williams gets all time record of 307 Grand Slam wins
