Tennis- After losses of top seed Misaki Doi and second seed Yanina Wickmayer, the fourth seed Johanna Larsson also exited from the Japan Women's Open WTA Tournament but highest ranked player left in the tournament, third seed Yulia Putintseva reached second round with a straight sets win.
In first round match, Putintseva faced World No.98, Maria Sakkari, who is the only Greek player in top 100. Putintseva was broken one time each in both sets, but she broke her opponent twice in the first set and three times in the second set to secure 6-4, 6-3 win to reach the second round, where she will face Japan's Kurumi Nara.
Japan's Naomi Osaka won Anett Kontaveit of Estonia in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 but two other Japanese qualifiers Erika Sema and Miyu Kato lost to Poland's Magda Linette and Rebecca Peterson respectively. Fourth seed Larsson was knocked out in 3 sets 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 by USA's Varvara Lepchenko, whereas Slovakia's Jana Cepelova eased past South Korea qualifier Su Jeong Jang in straight sets.
Czech Republic's Katerina Siniakova edged USA's Louisa Chirico in a marathon, gruelling 3 setter encounter 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (3) which lasted for just two minutes less than 3 hours.
