Tennis- Fifth seed Madison Keys was stunned in the first round whereas sixth seed Dominika Cibulkova, 2-time Wimbledon champion and former World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki progressed into the second round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open WTA Tournament in Tokyo.
World No.9 Keys took on World No.38 Yulia Putintseva, who she faced for the first time. The Kazakh took the first set 6-3 but Keys levelled it at by taking the second set by same score. The third set was decided by tie-break, in which Keys was 1-3 down but she won 5 out of next six points to go 6-4 up and had 2 match points.
But Putintseva saved them and won the tie-break 9-7 to stun the American. Seventh seed, 2-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova registered a straight sets 6-3, 6-3 win over America's Madison Brengle and will face Olympic gold medallist Monica Puig next.
Puig had beaten Kvitova in Olympics semifinals last month. Eighth seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova won the first set 6-4 against former world No.9 Andrea Petkovic and was 2-0 up in the second set when the German retired. She will face Ukraine's Elina Svitolina next, who won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 against America's CoCo Vandeweghe.
Former World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki needed 3 sets to beat highest ranked teenager in the world, Belinda Bencic 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Wozniacki will take on fourth seed Carla Suarez Navarro next. Sixth seed Dominika Cibulkova also needed 3 sets to beat the former World No.5 Lucie Safarova 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.
