WTA TOKYO- Top seed Muguruza reaches last 8, third seed Pliskova ousted

Tennis- Top seed Garbine Muguruza reached the Quarterfinals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open WTA Tournament in Tokyo but third seed Karolina Pliskova and eighth seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova were shown exit door. World No.3 Muguruza was looking for a revenge of last month's US Open loss against Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova, who had stunned French Open champion in straight sets in the second round in New York.

But the lightning did not strike twice as Muguruza won it in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 this time. Muguruza will face Ukraine's Elina Svitolina next, who knocked out the eighth seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-6(5), 6-4 and recorded first win against the Russian in their third meeting.

Qualifier Magda Linette came back from one set down and saved a match point in the third set as she defeated Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 and will face former World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki next. Another qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich stunned the third seed, US Open finalist Karolina Pliskova in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 to set up a meeting with Japan's Naomi Osaka, who had beaten sixth seed Dominika Cibulkova in the second round.
