Caroline Wozniacki is back! If there were still some doubts left regarding the comeback of the Dane in the last part of the season, former world number one proved everyone wrong, as she outlasted Agnieszka Radwanska in the semifinals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo to secure a spot in tomorrow’s final.
Wozniacki, currently ranked 28th in the world, had to fight back against the 27-year old from Krakow in one of the toughest match of the season, won by 4-6 7-5 6-4 in almost three hours. The Dane was actually the first to take a break as she went up 4-3 in the first set.
From that moment on, Radwanska reacted and won 6 games out of the following 7 to close the first set out and gain a beak also in the second set. World number 4 found herself up 5-3 and went on to serve for the match in the tenth game.
Far from being defeated, Wozniacki kept pushing and won four games in a row, sealing the second set 7-5. In the final set, both players struggled on serve. Radwanska first went up 3-1, then found herself down 3-5. Wozniacki didn’t back down but actually managed to push even further and she eventually closed the match out at the fourth match point.
The Dane confirms her positive trend against former world number two, as she leads the head-2-head 9-4, and took a revenge on the last match played in Tokyo, back in 2012, when Radwanska had beaten her 6-4 6-3. She comes back to play a WTA final after 1 year and half, since her last appearance in Stuttgart 2015, where she lost to Angelique Kerber.
Getting a step closer to the top 20 and on the way to her 24th career title, the 26-year old from Odense will now face fan favourite and home player Naomi Osaka, who fought back against Ukrainian Elina Svitolina and secured a spot in the final by winning 1-6 6-3 6-2 and reaching the first WTA final of her career.
