Jelena Jankovic’s run for a back-to-back title in Guangzhou ended up in the final, as second seeded was defeated by Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko. An extremely tight match won by Tsurenko 6-4 3-6 6-4 in 2 hours and 27 minutes.
World number 80 started off very well, as she took an early break in the second game and went up 4-1. Both players were extremely shaky in their service games and Jankovic had for two times in a row, in the eight and tenth game, the chance to level up with the Ukrainian.
She missed it both times and lost the first set by 6-4. After a slow start also in the second set (0-2), the Serbian finally found some grit and became more consistent from the baseline, claiming a double break to close 6-3.
The final set was very intense and tight, with both players feeling the pressure of a possible title. Tsurenko was the first to take a break in the seventh game but she held it terribly as she lost her serve to 0 in the following game.
Back to 4-4 and when it seemed for Jankovic to have gained a mental edge, the Ukrainian found her way back by taking a second break and sealing the match in the tenth game. The 27-year old clinched her second WTA title, after last year’s prime in Istanbul.
It’s a positive note on a year that, before the fourth round at the US Open, had been horrible for the Ukrainian, whose best result were the quarter-finals reached in Nurnberg and the third round in Indian Wells. Jankovic, on the other hand, fails to win her 16th career title but finally reaches the first final in a season that had given her nothing so far.
