WTA TAIWAN: Terrible day for the seeds, as Rogers, Garcia and Sevastova are all beaten!

The Wednesday was a day to forget for the seeds in Taiwan, as 3 out of 4 got beaten in the second round, including 3rd and 4th! Qualifier Ons Jabeur ousted the 7th seed Shelby Rogers by 7-5 6-2 in an hour and 24 minutes, firing 11 aces and saving 3 out of 4 break points to keep the result under her control.

Mandy Minella from Luxembourg stunned the 3rd seed Caroline Garcia 6-4 6-4 in 81 minutes for her 7th WTA quarter-final. Minella served great and she managed to finish the match in straight sets with 4 breaks under her belt.

The 6th seed Misaki Doi was the only seed who avoid the early exit, beating fellow Japanese Risa Ozaki 6-4 6-3 after saving 14 out of 16 break points! Without good serves on both sides, each player had its chances but it was better-ranked Doi who showed more clutch in the deciding moments to prevail after almost an hour and 40 minutes.

Lucie Safarova is in a great rhythm here in Taipei City, reaching the quarter-final after a rock solid 6-2 6-4 victory over the 4th seed Anastasija Sevastova in just 67 minutes, losing serve only once and breaking her rival 4 times to stay in front all the time.

Ons Jabeur mixed her game great today to leave Shelby Rogers with no answer, hitting 11 aces and winning 29 out of 35 points on her first serve. Tunisian was the more aggressive player on the court, keeping the points on her racquet and always changing the pace with well-measured drop shots.

She won almost 50% of the return points to create 6 break points and convert 4 of those, enough for a 7-5 6-2 win. The first brought a great struggle and a lot of deuces on both sides, but the result remained with serve after back-to-back breaks in games 4 and 5.

Jabeur was more composed in the closing stages, breaking Rogers at 15 in game 11 and sealing the set in the following game, after saving a break point. The second set was more fluid and Ons shifted into a higher gear that Shelby wasn't able to follow.

American won just 3 points on return and she dropped her serve in games 3 and 7 to find herself 5-2 down before Jabeur crossed the finish line with another solid service game for a 6-2, advancing to her first WTA quarter-final since Baku in 2013!
Mandy Minella and Caroline Garcia played in 2011 and 2012 on the lower-ranked circuit, with Minella winning both matches, and she did the same today, ousting world number 25 6-4 6-4 for her career-best victory! In addition, this was the first Top 50 win for Minella since April 2013 inMarrakech when she ousted Kaia Kanepi.

A player from Luxembourg took full advantage of indoor court, playing aggressive and winning 83% of the points behind her first serve. She saved 3 out of 5 break points and grabbed 4 chances on return to stay in front throughout the match.

The first was very tight, with 2 break points for each, and it was Mandy who made the decisive move with a break in game 5. She saved those 2 break points in the following game and brought the set home after that easily for a 6-4.

The second set was a feast of breaks, as we witnessed 5 in a row from the 3rd game! Minella scored 3 to be 4-3 up and she managed to hold in the next two service games to deliver a very important win that will for sure boost her rankings position.

In an all-Japanese affair, Misaki Doi beat Risa Ozaki 6-4 6-3 to reach the last 8, but the match time shows us that it was much harder than the result suggest. Doi had better percentages on serve but realistically they both had numerous opportunities for a break, especially in the opening set (21, against just 5 in the second).

In the end, Doi saved 14 out of 16 break points and scored 5 breaks to find herself on the winning side. That first set lasted almost an hour, which is not surprising considering how many break points they had. After exchanged breaks in games 3 and 4 Doi made another one in game 9 to go 5-4 up, and she clinched the set in the following game, but only after coming from 0-40 deficit, winning 5 points in a row.

Set number 2 saw better serving from both and only 6 break points, and it was Doi who scored 3 breaks in a row to finish the match in style and move to the last 8. Second round results: [Q]Ons Jabeur (TUN) vs [7]Shelby Rogers (USA) 7-5 6-2
