Daria Kasatkina needed just 59 minutes to dismiss Danka Kovinic in the opening round of Charleston, scoring a 6-1 6-2 triumph. Young Russian dropped just 9 points in 7 service games, never facing a break point, and she was also the dominant figure on the return as well, taking 55% of the points on Kovinic's serve, including 5 breaks from 11 chances she created.

Daria broke her rival 3 times in the first set to set the tone for the rest of the match, moving 4-1 ahead in the second set before she capped the win with another one in game 8. Samantha Stosur, seeded 6th, was just too good for Jelena Jankovic, beating her 6-1 6-3 in just 73 minutes. Stosur took charge with her solid groundstrokes, dominating the points and forcing a lot of errors fro Serb, who just couldn't find her range today.

The Aussie lost her serve once but she was all over her opponent in return games, creating 12 break points and converting 5 to stay in front from start to finish. Samantha won 5 straight games to wrap up the opener but Jankovic responded at the start of the second, creating a 3-1 lead.

That was all she could do, though, losing the next 5 games, including 3 breaks of serve, standing no chances in trying to force a decider. Shuai Zhang was also in the right rhythm, taking down Misaki Doi 6-2 6-1 in 63 minutes. Chinese lost 9 points in 7 service games, saving 2 break points at the start of the second set to keep her serve intact, and she got 5 breaks, more than enough for a commanding triumph.

Zhang found the right shots early on, staying untouched on serve and taking rival's serve in the first and fifth games for an easy 6-2. Nothing changed in set number 2, Chinese rattled off 6 straight games to wrap up the win in no time at all, booking her place in the second round.

Promising Hungarian Fanny Stollar, ranked 282nd, scored a very important 6-3 7-5 win over another qualifier, Asia Muhammad. It was a close encounter, with a similar number of break points, and 18-year-old managed to held her nerves, repelling 8 out of 10 break chances to keep the control over the scoreboard.

On the other hand, she took 4 break opportunities to keep the pressure on her opponent until the last point. Stollar had an early lead before Muhammad pulled the break back in game 5. Nevertheless, Hungarian went in front again with a break in game 8 and she saved 4 break points in the marathon game 9 to win the opener by 6-3.

There were no breaks in the opening 8 games of the second set before Stollar took a 5-4 lead, serving for the match in the following game. Asia found the way to break back, leveling the score at 5-5 after saving 3 match points, but her efforts were in vain, as Stollar broke again in game 11, and this time she did close the match on own serve to reach the next round.
