Kiki Bertens, the top seed here in Bogota, has made the winning start, beating Nina Stojanovic 6-4 6-1 in 63 minutes. Bertens lost her serve 3 times but that wasn't enough for Stojanovic to make any significant change, as she lost almost 70% of the points on her serve, dropping serve 7 times from 9 chances that Bertens created.
Stojanovic stayed in touch until 3-3 in the first set, as both players scored 2 breaks, and it was Bertens who broke again in game 7 to bring the set home with two solid holds. Nina lost the ground on her serve in set number 2 completely, Bertens broke her easily 4 times to seal the deal in just over an hour.
Sara Errani defeated the 7th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova by 6-2 6-4 in 69 minutes, breaking the Russian 7 times. Errani had much better first serve percentage and despite losing her serve 4 times she was in front all the time.
Alexandrova opened the match with a break but she failed to hold throughout the first set to lose it by 6-2. In the second set, Errani was 5-1 ahead before losing the next 3 games, as the Russian got a chance to get back on the scoreboard completely.
Still, Sara managed to close the match with another break in game 10, avoiding the further struggle and a potential tie break. Dalila Jakupovic scored a similar 6-2 6-4 triumph over Irina Falconi in 64 minutes, breaking her rival 7 times to control the scoreboard from start to finish. Interestingly, Falconi had even more break points, 11 in total, but she converted just 4, which wasn't enough for a more positive result.
Jakupovic broke Falconi on all 4 occasions in the first set and another 3 breaks in the second set were sufficient to send her over the finish line. A former Roland Garros champion Francesca Schiavone took down the 6th seed Patricia Maria Tig by 6-3 6-4, using the fact that Romanian served at terrible 38%, breaking her 5 times. Schiavone had 7 double faults but her first serve worked well, and she also had the edge from the baseline to claim straight sets win.
Italian opened the match in a stronger fashion, creating a 3-0 gap, but Tig bounced back to level the score at 3-3. Still, Francesca played better in the closing stages, breaking her rival in game 8 to cap the set on own serve in the next game.
Tig had a great chance to send the match into a decider, building up a 4-0 lead in set number 2, but she faded from the court after that, as Schiavone won the last 6 games to make a complete comeback to grab her first WTA win since October. First round results:
