Dreamy week for Mona Barthel so far. The German player won her seventh match in Prague, where she started from the qualifying draw, beating the third seeded player Barbora Strycova 3-6 6-2 6-3 after two hours and seven minutes.
Strycova and Barthel were tied on 3-3 in the head to head, the last meeting was dated to 2015 Antwerp when Strycova easily won. But now Barthel seems another player, and today she confirmed all the progresses made this year.
With this result the Bad Segeberg Native, who will bid to win her fourth career-title and the first one since 2014 Bastad, earns 18 places and will be World No. 64 by next week, No. 56 if she wins the title. In the final she will face Krystina Pliskova, who beat Jelena Ostapenko 6-4 6-2. Ostapenko was playing for the second time in the day as she had beaten Ana Konjuh 6-3 in the third set after that the match was suspended due to darkness on Thursday.
Against Pliskova, there wasn't much to do for Ostapenko. The Czech player hit 17 aces, won 29 points on 33 played on serve and got broken only twice. She will bid to win her third career title after 2016 Dalian and Tashkent. WTA PRAGUE - Semifinals matches results on Friday:
