The No. 1 seed Caroline Wozniacki is already out. The Danish player was forced to retire after that she lost the first set 7/6(8) to the American Shelby Rogers. In the first set Rogers was up 5-1, but then Wozniacki recovered and took it to the tie-break, not converting three set points.

Not only Wozniacki, but also the second seeded player Elena Vesnina, who took a wild card, is out. The Russian lost to Camila Giorgi 1-6 6-1 6-1. Giorgi had beaten the World No. 3 Karolina Pliskova last month. After dominating the first set, Vesnina only won two games in the rest of the match. Daria Gavrilova, who reached quarter-finals in Rome, continued her good moment defeating Louisa Chirico 6-2 6-3. Caroline Garcia beat Jennifer Brady, also Peng Shuai and Madison Brengle advanced.
