Roland Garros: Mladenovic upsets Muguruza in three sets!

Kristina Mladenovic makes Paris dream. The French player upset the defending champion Garbine Muguruza 6-1 3-6 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals at the Roland Garros for the first time in her career. With this result 'Kiki' will get closer to the top 10 (she will be at least No.

12, in the top 5 if she wins the title), while Muguruza will leave top 10, she will be at least No. 14 as she needed to reach the final to stay in top 10. At the beginning of the match Garbine hit many unforced errors including smash, but in the second set she played better taking advantage of Mladenovic's drop.

Garbine was up 5-1, got broken but she closed it 6-3. In the early third set Muguruza was broken, got nervous and Mladenovic, although she hit almost 20 double faults in total, managed to go through after two hours. In the quarter-finals she will face Timea Bacsinszky, who defeated Venus Williams 5/7 6/2 6/1.

The Swiss player beats Venus for the second time in a row here in Paris, she did it last year always at fourth round level. With Venus's elimination, there will be a new women's singles Roland Garros champion. The 2010 finalist Samantha Stosur, who had reached semifinals here last year, lost to Jelena Ostapenko 2/6 6/2 6/4.

It's Ostapenko's first quarter-final at Grand Slam level, she will face Caroline Wozniacki next.
