Both top seeds struggled to win their first match in Eastbourne. Angelique Kerber defeated Krystina Pliskova 4/6 6/1 7/5 in an hour and 34 minutes to get her 48th career-win on grass, 20th win this year overall and the second one coming back from one set down.

The World No. 1, who was playing her first match of the year on grass after that she had withdrawn from Birmingham, hit five double faults and was broken twice. She struggled in the first set where Pliskova played aggressive, then dominated the second set and in the third set after getting broken back on 2-1 up, Kerber managed to break her opponent on 5-all and Advance into the second round where she will face Lara Arruabarrena.

Three sets win also for Simona Halep, who defeated Duan Ying-ying 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The Romanian hit 32 winners and 20 unforced errors and won the match in an hour and 42 mins. She will face Tsvetana Pironkova, who defeated Niculescu in straights.

Kristina Mladenovic beat Zhang Shuai, while Svetlana Kuznetsova defeated Mona Barthel 6/2 in the third set. Caroline Wozniacki and Johanna Konta advanced, while Garbine Muguruza and Timea Bacsinszky were upset. Women's Singles matches on Wednesday:
