The first seeded player Caroline Garcia was upset by the World No. 140 Tereza Martincova 7-5 7-6(1) in two hours. Garcia ends the match having many regrets: she didn't convert five set points serving for the first set on 5-4.

Two games later, on 6-5 Martincova converted her third set point to win the set. In the second set Martincova broke Garcia in the fourth game, but on 5-4, serving for the match, she was broken at 15. In the tie-break the Czech player prevailed seven points to one, she will face Patty Schnyder or Antonia Lottner in the quarters.

Kiki Bertens advanced into the quarter-finals at Gstaad beating the qualifier German player Anna Zaja 6-4 6-2 in an hour and 27 minutes. Bertens saved all the four break points faced, she hit seven aces and won 80% first serve points.

Zaja, a World No. 250 who had won already three matches including the two played in the qualifying draw, got broken thrice in the whole match and she didn't have really the chance to lead the score. On Friday Bertens, who this year won Nurnberg title on clay for the second year in a row, will face Johanna Larsson, who beat Barbara Haas 1-6 7-5 6-1 in two hours and nine minutes.
