The World No. 2 Simona Halep opened her run in Washington with a win. The Romanian player defeated the 2015 winner Sloane Stephens, currently World No. 957 after undergoing a foot injury, by 7-6(3) 6-0 to advance into the second round where she will face Mariana Duque Marino.
It wasn't a brilliant performanfe by Halep, but still good enough to beat Stephens, who played only one match this year at Wimbledon losing to Riske. The first set was very balanced, but it wasn't played at a high level: Stephens hit 33 unforced errors and only five winners, while Halep hit 20 unforced and Just three winners.
Halep didn't convert three break points in a row in the eighth game and then other two set points in the 12th, while Stephens didn't convert a break point on 5-5 missing a forehand. In the tie-break Halep made double fault straightaway, but she took advantage of Stephens hitting many unforced errors and so Simona won it by seven points to three.
Halep dominated in the second set and achieved it in just 25 mins. The Costanza native won her 31th match this year and will face Mariana Duque Marino next. Also Ekaterina Makarova, Patricia Tig and Monica Puig advanced. Women's Singles Round 1 matches on Tuesday:
