WTA Cincinnati - Kerber, Venus Williams upset. Cibulkova, Wozniacki through

The defending finalist Angelique Kerber got upset by Ekaterina Makarova in the third set tie-break after two hours and 38 minutes. It took eight match points to Makarova to win the match and get her eighth win over a top 10 player this year.

It was the 13th meeting between these two players, the second one this year after Roland Garros where Makarova had easily won. Today the result was more balanced but at the end the winner was the same. With this loss Kerber will drop two places, she will be at least World No.

5 by next week, and could leave top 10 at the US Open if she loses early. In the other matches good win for Dominika Cibulkova who beat Alizè Cornet 6-1 6-4. The Slovak player will face Johana Konta next in what is probably the most interesting third round match.

15th seeded player Anastasija Sevastova defeated the Italian Roberta Vinci in straight sets, while Ashleigh Barty upset Venus Williams 6-3 2-6 6-2. It was Barty's fourth win in a row as she went through the qualifying draw.

The American player could not find rhythm and will get to US Open with just three wins under her belt. In the third round Barty will face Caroline Wozniacki, who defeated Elena Vesnina 6-4 6-2. Carla Suarez Navarro and Julia Goerges advanced as well. Women's Singles matches on Wednesday:
