Caroline Wozniacki is out. The 2009 and 2014 US Open finalist lost to Ekaterina Makarova by 6-1 in the third set. The Russian player could have prevailed in straight sets as she was up 6-2 5-3. Wozniacki broke her at love and in the tie-break she managed to win.

However in the third set Caroline wasn't there mentally and physically. Sloane Stephens's fairytale continues. After reaching Toronto quarters and Cincinnati semifinals, the American player reached third round here by upsetting the 11th seeded player Dominika Cibulkova in three sets.

Wozniacki was one of the eight players who had chances to become No. 1 at the end of the tournament. Now only five remain. Garbine Muguruza reached third round at the US Open for the first time in her career. The Spaniard player defeated Yingying Duan by 6-4 6-0 to win her seventh match in a row.

In the first set Muguruza saved the only break point faced through the whole match and it took five set points to her to prevail. In the second set Duan was broken thrice and Garbine lost just one point on serve. In the third round Muguruza will face Magdalena Rybarikova, who beat Krystina Pliskova in two tie-breaks.

Venus Williams didn't play her best tennis but she managed to win in straight sets. The American player defeated Oceane Dodin by 6-4 7-5 on Arthur Ashe Stadium and she will face Maria Sakkari next. Caroline Garcia and Petra Kvitova advanced.
