WTA Bogota: Bogdan, Arruabarrena and Sorribes Tormo advance to round two

The 7th seed Ana Bogdan is through to the second round in Bogota after a 6-1 7-6 win over Mariana Duque-Marino in an hour and 34 minutes. Three years ago in Acapulco it was Duque-Marino who came out stronger but Bogdan played better today, defending her second serve in a more efficient way and saving three out of five break points to limit the damage in her games.

They both served under 50% but that affected Mariana's game more, losing more than 50% of the points on her serve and getting broken four times from eight opportunities Bogdan created. Ana found her range early on and she lost just six points on serve in the opening set, keeping the pressure on the other side of the net.

Duque-Marino couldn't deal with it and she gave her serve away twice in games four and six to lose the opener 6-1 in 30 minutes. Bogdan carried the momentum to set number two as well and she earned a break in game three to move closer to the finish line.

Everything could have been over in the fifth game when the Romanian had another break point but Mariana saved it to remain in touch, only to lose serve in game seven to fall 6-1 5-2 behind. Bogdan served for the win twice, in games eight and 10, only to be denied on both occasions, allowing her rival to climb back to 5-5 and having to save a set point in game 12 to set up a tie break.

Nonetheless, Ana won all five return points in the tie break to sail through by 7-2 and reach the last 16 in another rainy day that kept the players away from the court for some time. First round results:
