23-year-old Slovakian Anna Karolina Schmiedlova was ranked in the Top 100 between 2013-2015 but she started to struggle since then, finishing outside the Top 200 in 2016 and making a slow progress in the season behind us.
Anna Karolina is currently ranked 132nd but that didn't stop her to show signs of her old form and went all the way in Bogota, claiming her third WTA title with a 6-2 6-4 win over the 5th seed Lara Arruabarrena in an hour and 20 minutes for her biggest result in three years. They played only once before at Indian Wells in 2014 and Scmiedlova grabbed that one as well, improving her score over the Spaniard to 2-0 today.
It was a poor performance from both on serve and the returners claimed the majority of the points, with 18 break points in total and 13 service games lost! The Slovakian has dropped serve five times from six opportunities she gave to Lara but that didn't hurt her much, winning staggering 68% of the return points and stealing rival's serve eight times to seal the deal in straight sets.
Arruabarrena was miserable on her first serve (8 from 34) and she couldn't hope for a better result with such weak numbers, giving her serve away seven times in a row since the start of the match! The match kicked off with four breaks in a row, setting the tone for the rest of the encounter, and it was Schmiedlova who managed to control the initial shot in the rest of the set, breaking Arruabarrena in games six and eight to close the set by 6-2 in some 35 minutes.
They traded breaks at love at the start of set number two and it was Schmiedlova who raced into a 5-1 lead, clinching every return game since the start of the match! Lara saved a match point in game seven on the return and she started to climb back, breaking back in games seven and nine, reducing her deficit to 4-5.
Nonetheless, Anna Karolina pulled herself together and she earned another break in game 10 to complete the win and lift the title. Final result:
