WTA Istanbul: Wozniacki retires. Polona Hercog edges Svetlana Kuznetsova

World number 2 and Istanbul top seed Caroline Wozniacki suffered a 4-6 6-3 defeat to Pauline Parmentier, being forced to retire due to an abdominal injury. This was the fourth meeting between these two (they have met for the first time in Amelia Island in 2008) and the first win for the French player, who notched her first Top 10 win at the age of 32! The Dane served at 75% but she clearly struggled to find the pace and the speed on her initial shot and she decided to quit after getting broken in the ninth game of set number two, not wanting to risk more serious injury.

Parmentier had to play against nine break points and she got broken four times, giving her serve away thrice in the opening set to find herself 6-4 down. She started to play better in the rest of the match, breaking Caroline twice at the start of set number two to create a 5-1 gap before Wozniacki pulled one break back in game eight.

Nonetheless, Parmentier grabbed another break in the ninth game for a 6-3 when Caroline decided she has had enough. sending Pauline into the semis just a week after she lost both Fed Cup matches against Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys. Quarter-final results:
