WTA Madrid: Muguruza overpowers Vekic. Suarez Navarro stuns Svitolina

World number 3 Garbine Muguruza has never played well in front of the home crowd in Caja Magica but that could all change this week as she reached the third round for the first time following a hard-fought 2-6 6-4 6-1 win over Donna Vekic in two hours and one minute. Back in Monterey in 2014, Vekic prevailed over Muguruza in two tie breaks and she was on a good course in this match as well, breaking the Spaniard three times in the opening set to move in front and leading in the second set as well before Garbine managed to turn the scoreboard around and dominate in the rest of the match.

Muguruza played better and better as the match progressed, facing no break points in the final set and there was no way Vekic could match that pace in her games, getting broken five times overall to end her run in the second round.

The Croatian found her shots early on and she opened a 3-0 lead with a double break, confirming the set with another break in game seven and a hold at love a few minutes later. Garbine was in all kind of troubles when she got broken at love in game five of set number two but she regained her composure instantly, breaking back in game six and delivering another break in game 10 for a 6-4 and a chance to win the match in the decider.

Donna had nothing left in the tank anymore, losing serve in games two and six, and Muguruza crossed the finish line with a hold in game seven, happy with the way she performed in the last 12 games or so. Second round results:
