Mihaela Buzarnescu, the No.4 seed, moved into the quarterfinals of the Internationaux de Strasbourg with a 6-3, 7-6(2) victory over teenager Elena Rybakina. who was playing in her first main draw outside of Russia. The Romanian claimed the 205th overall win on clay to reach the quarter-finals for the third time this season after the final run in Hobart and Prague.
Rybakina managed to save a couple of match points on serve in the 12th game of the second set but Buzarnescu extended her tiebreak record to 6-2 this season as she won 66% of second serve points. She sealed the match on her fourth opportunity and will now play Su-Wei Hsieh, the No.8 seed, or Lucia Safarova.
In her first career meeting, Qiang Wang defeated No7 seed Danielle Collins 46 75 62. Despite loss, the American maintains an excellent 13-1 win-loss record in three setters this season while the Chinese completed the third comeback win in 2018.
Wang claimed her tenth overall victory of the season, the 25th in her career on clay. She improved to 36-62 against top-100 opponents and clinched the quarter-finals for the first time this season. Zarina Diyas beat No.6 seed Timea Babos for the second time in as many clashes, as she won on the hard courts of Shenzhen.
The Kazakh completed six breaks to seal the 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-2 victory. In her second quarter-final of the season, Diyas is set to take on No.3 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or Natalia Vikhlyantseva facing for the second time in their career.
The younger Russian has won eight of the last ten clashes against countrywomen but just two of the last nine meetings against top 30 opponents. Last year, Pavlyuchenkova easily dismissed her 62 62 at Australian Open in the second round.
