Playing against each other for the first time, Lara Arruabarrena defeated the 5th seed and compatriot Carla Suarez Navarro 6-4 7-6 in an hour and 22 minutes for the place in the second round. It was a fast and floating match with good serving from both, and the younger Spaniard fends off three out of four break points to keep the edge, winning one point more than Carla who gave her serve away twice from three opportunities Arrubarrena created.
Lara was off to a perfect start, breaking in games three and five for a 5-1 lead and she closed the opener in game 10 after a hold at 15. After those two service games she lost, Suarez Navarro dominated behind her initial shot and she faced only one break point by the end of the match, staying neck and neck with Arruabarrena.
Lara saved two break points in the sixth game of the second set and her only break point came in game 11 but they sailed through the set unbroken to set up a tie break. There, Lara scored three mini-breaks and she converted her second match point to take the breaker 7-4 and book the spot in the last 16. Monday's results:
