World number three and the top seed in Birmingham Garbine Muguruza is through to the second round after an impressive 6-1 6-2 win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in just 59 minutes. The Russian won their previous match in Stuttgart when Muguruza had to retire but it was all about the Spanish player this time around, delivering fury from her first serve and winning 50% of the points on the return as well to score one of his best wins on grass.
Garbine lost just seven points on serve, never facing a break point, and she scored four breaks from six chances, racing into a 3-0 lead and never looking back. 12 of the opening 14 points landed to the side of the better-ranked player and she scored another break in game six for a 5-1, serving for the opener in the following game in no time at all.
Another good hold gave her the lead in just over 30 minutes and she played even better in set number two, dropping two points behind her serve and breaking her rival in games three and seven for a commanding triumph and a match well worth of a Wimbledon champion. First round results:
