Defending champion Petra Kvitova has made another big step in her Birmingham quest, beating the 5th seed Julia Goerges 6-1 6-4 in an hour and six minutes for the place in the semis. This was the sixth straight win for the Czech against the German and the fourth in 2018, dropping just 11 points in nine service games and fending off all three break points in a clinical performance that was unmatched by Julia.
Goerges had just four aces and she lost 45% of the points in her games, playing against six break chances and getting broken thrice, staying in touch in the most of the second set but not being able to produce a break. Petra raced into a 5-0 lead, repelling three break points in games three and five and breaking Julia in games two and for, closing the set with a hold at love in game seven for a commanding 6-1.
The second set kicked off with a break for Petra and that proved to be the pivotal moment since they both served well in the rest of the match, with just nine points for the returners in the last nine games. Kvitova sailed through her service games, losing two points in five service games and sealing the deal with a hold at love in game 10 to reach the semis in dominant fashion. Quarter-final results:
