The 19-year-old American Sofia Kenin is through to her first WTA semi-final after a rock solid 6-3 6-3 win over the top seed and world number 6 Caroline Garcia, her first over a Top 10 rival in a career! Sofia fired seven aces and she did everything right in her games, losing 17 points in nine service games to fend off two out of three break points and keep the pressure on her rival.
Garcia never found her rhythm and she was very nervous in the most of the match, bothered by some noise from the crowd and her poor level. She lost almost half of the points in her games and Kenin broke four times from eight opportunities to control the scoreboard and earn a well-deserved triumph for the place in the last four.
Sofia found her range right on and she broke in game five to open up a 4-2 lead with another good hold in game six. Garcia struggled a lot in those moments, saving two break points in game seven but getting broken once again at 3-5 to hand the set to her young opponent.
They traded breaks at the start of the second set and Sofia moved in front with another break in game six, serving for the win at 5-3. Garcia made one last push, creating two break points but wasting both and allowing Kenin to cross the finish line after a service winner. Quarter-final results:
