After reaching the semi-final in Tokyo, Donna Vekic won just three matches in the next three tournaments and she is back on the winning way in Luxembourg, toppling Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-0 6-1 in an hour and 14 minutes for her 33rd win of the season. The Croat fired six aces and she fends off all five break points she faced, dominating on the return to take 63% of the points in Schmiedlova's games to control the scoreboard all the time.
Anna Karolina won just 19 out of 52 points behind her initial shot and she got broken six times from 12 opportunities she gave to Donna to finish her journey in the opening round. Despite just six games played, the first set lasted for almost 50 minutes thanks to almost 20 deuces and 13 break chances.
Five games reached at least one deuce and it was Vekic who was on a higher level in the deciding points, saving those five break points and breaking the rival three times for a 6-0. The second set was much more fluid, lasting for less than 30 minutes and offering just one deuce, although nothing changed on the scoreboard.
Donna won the opening four games and she was the dominant figure in her games, dropping two points and stealing Schmiedlova's serve in games one, three and seven for the place in the second round, taking the opening 10 games and hoping for more of the same in the matches to come.
A former world number 7 Belinda Bencic has lost the last six matches on the Tour but she will try to change that here in Luxembourg, beating Varvara Lepchenko 6-3 7-5 in an hour and 35 minutes for the place in the main draw. Monday's results:
