World no. 20 Sofia Kenin is through to the sixth quarter-final of the season, beating Alize Cornet 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 23 minutes. Just like in Hobart in January, Kenin had the upper hand on the court, dictating the pace in the rallies and defending the second serve good enough to suffer just two breaks from five chances offered to the French player.
Alize needed more than that to stay competitive, dropping half of the points in her games and giving serve away five times to finish her campaign in the second round. Sofia broke in games two and four to open a 4-1 gap, suffering a break at 15 in game seven to keep Cornet in contention before sealing the opener with a break at 15 in game ten for a 6-4.
Carried by this momentum, the American lost only four points in her games in set number two, delivering breaks in games six and eight to seal the deal and march into the last eight. The 7th seed Petra Martic took down Fiona Ferro 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in an hour and 44 minutes, overcoming a slow start and dominating in the rest of the encounter to advance into the quarters.
Ferro fended off all three break chances in the opening set and grabbed it with a break in game four before Martic took charge, stealing 24 out of 42 points on the return in the rest of the clash to control the scoreboard and move through with five breaks of serve in total.
In the battle of the former doubles partners, Kristina Mladenovic ousted Caroline Garcia 7-5, 6-2 in an hour and 41 minutes after an excellent display on serve. Kristina played against three break points and suffered two breaks, creating 17 opportunities on the other hand, seizing five to grab a tight opening set and dominate in the second, taking seven games in a row from a 5-4 down in the first to forge the victory.
