WTA Tianjin: Dayana Yastremska, Heather Watson and Magda Linette reach QF

Thursday had promised to be an excellent day for the home players in Tianjin but it turned into a disaster for those under the Chinese flag, with all three suffering losses to end the campaign in the second round. Veronika Kudermetova grabbed the opening five games against the 7th seed Saisai Zheng in 29 minutes before the Chinese decided to retire, sending the Russian into the seventh quarter-final of the season.

The 3rd seed Dayana Yastremska is through to the last eight for the fifth time in 2019, ousting Shuai Peng 6-2, 6-4 in swift 70 minutes. The Ukrainian repelled seven out of eight break chances and had the advantage on the return as well, breaking the opponent four times to seal the deal in straight sets.

Trailing 2-1, the youngster claimed seven consecutive games to open a 6-2, 2-0 gap, getting broken in the fourth game before stealing Peng's serve again at 3-3, fending off a break point in game ten to move over the top and remain on the title course.

The 8th seed Magda Linette stayed on the court for only 18 minutes, advancing when Kurumi Nara had to retire, struggling since the beginning of the encounter and deciding to step away from the court and send the Pole through.

Heather Watson took down the 2nd seed Qiang Wang 6-3, 6-0 in an hour and 17 minutes, reaching the first WTA quarter-final of the season and gathering much-needed points after dropping out from the top-100. The Briton saved seven out of eight break chances to mount the pressure on the other side of the net, stealing 56% of the return points to secure five breaks from ten opportunities and leave the better-ranked rival far behind.

The first set offered a grueling battle and some 50 minutes of tennis, with Watson who controlled the pace with breaks in games two and six, suffering one break and sealing the set with a nice hold at 5-3. Heather was the only player on the court in set number two, dropping nine points overall and serving a bagel to advance into the next round in style, hoping for more of the same against Magda Linette in the quarters.
