Shenzhen: Garbine Muguruza's confidence sees her through to semi-finals

Tournament sixth seed Garbine Muguruza was the first player to reach the 2020 Shenzhen International semi-finals on Thursday. The Spaniard toughened out a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Kazakhstan's Zarina Diyas in two hours and 10 minutes, which included 13 aces.

In her post-match media interaction, Muguruza shared, "I was expecting a very tough match, and at the end, it was. I think she came out in the second set playing much better. I just kept competing and I'm happy with this kind of victories."

She also spoke about the work she had done in the pre-season. "I did a good pre-season. I worked very hard. There’s not a secret to success. When you work hard, in the end, things will pay off. Stay there when things don’t go well and keep fighting through.

Good things will come," Muguruza commented. Before the start of the season, Muguruza had reunited with former coach and countrywoman, Conchita Martinez. The former world no. 1 will play fifth seed Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia in the semi-finals.

Alexandrova defeated home player, the fourth-seeded Qiang Wang 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in two hours and eight minutes in their last-eight match. In the bottom half of the draw, Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina and the Czech Republic's Kristyna Pliskova set up a semi-final clash.

The seventh-seeded Rybakina upset the third-seeded Elise Mertens of Belgium 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in 121 minutes. Pliskova defeated Ukraine's Kateryna Bondarenko 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 12 minutes.
