Former US Open champion Samantha Stosur, and two-time former Major champion Svetlana Kuznetsova were the biggest exiters on Tuesday at the Hobart International. The Australian, who received a wild card to play the event lost to fifth seed Veronika Kudermetova of Russia in their first-round match.
Kudermetova won in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in just 64 minutes. Meanwhile, the 53rd ranked Kuznetsova was handed a defeat by the sixth-seeded Pole Magda Linette in their opening-round match. Linette needed two tie-breaks to take the win against the Russian, 7-6(2), 7-6(9).
Kudermetova awaits the winner of the match between USA's Cici Bellis and Czech Marie Bouzkova. Linette will take on the United States' Lauren Davis. Davis defeated Australian wild-card entrant Astra Sharma on Tuesday 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(6).
France's Fiona Ferro set up a second-round clash against Briton Heather Watson. Ferro advanced in the draw after her opening-round opponent, seventh-seeded Swede Rebecca Petersen withdrew from their match while the first-set scores were tied at 4-all.
Watson, who qualified for the main draw, defeated Swiss Jil Teichmann 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round. The Czech Republic's Kristyna Pliskova defeated Serbian lucky loser Nina Stojanovic 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. Earlier, Stojanovic received a delayed entry into the main draw after Romanian qualifier Sorana Cirstea was forced to pull out of the event with an injury to her left leg.
Pliskova awaits the winner between eighth-seeded Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia and Australian wild card, Lizette Cabrera, in the second round. In the clash between two qualifiers, Ukraine's Kateryna Kozlova got past Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-2, 6-1.
Either fourth seed Shuai Zhang or Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens will play Kozlova in the second round. In the last match of the day, Slovakian Viktoria Kuzmova defeated Lin Zhu of China, 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(2).
