Thailand Open: Elina Svitolina tames Storm Sanders to reach quarter-finals

Top-seed Elina Svitolina continued from where she had left off in her opening-round match at the Thailand Open in Hua Hin. The Ukrainian defeated Australian qualifier Storm Sanders in their second-round match on Thursday 6-1, 6-2 in 57 minutes.

After her win, Svitolina said, “I was playing well today. I'm very happy with the way I was playing - I think she was really tough, I had to step up my game, and in the end, this was the key for the match. You have to adjust because it's very dark when you toss the ball.

That's pretty much the difference - but in the end, I'm happy to play later because it's cooler”. Svitolina will play eighth seed Nao Hibino in the quarter-finals. Hibino won her second-round match against Peangtarn Plipuech on Wednesday.

Patricia Maria Tig defeated Xiaodi You in their pre-quarterfinal clash. The Romanian won in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 in 74 minutes. Tig will play fourth-seeded Saisai Zheng in the last-eight. Zheng had also made it to the quarters on Wednesday.

Magda Linette of Poland, seeded fifth, defeated Shuai Peng in their round-of-16 meeting. This was also a straight-sets win culminating 7-5, 6-1 after an hour and 35 minutes of play. Linette will play another Chinese player Xiyu Wang who took down Barbara Haas 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 37 minutes in their second-round match. Photo Credit: WTA Tennis Twitter
