In Monterrey, on Friday, Elina Svitolina made it to her first semi-final of the 2020 season with a straight-sets 6-4, 7-5 win over Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez. The Ukrainian won the match in one hour and 38 minutes. She saved all five break points she faced and won almost 77 per cent of her first serves.

In the semi-finals, the top-seed faces the Netherlands’ Arantxa Rus. Rus ousted the sixth-seeded Swede Rebecca Peterson 6-1, 6-1 in 62 minutes. The other semi-final will be played between the second seed, Johanna Konta and ninth seed, Marie Bouzkova.

The Briton came through a tussle against Russia’s Anastasia Potapova in two hours and 40 minutes. The match saw Konta make a comeback from 2-5 down in the final set, and save two match points, before eventually clinching the win 6-7(6), 6-3, 7-6(7).

Konta, post her win, admitted the obvious that the match was tough. She also added, “Very tough conditions out there, it was very windy, very blustery, so it made it extra difficult for both of us to play, really. But I think overall, both of us played at a great level, we played a very exciting match for everybody who was there watching”.

Then, talking about her performance, Konta continued, “Personally I’m really pleased I’ve been able to come through such a tough match. Especially, it was the first of its kind for me this season, and to be able to come through it, I’m really pleased with it”.

Lastly, Konta’s semi-final opponent Bouzkova defeated the eighth seed, Yafan Wang 6-2, 7-5 in one hour and 51 minutes. Photo Credit: WTA Twitter
