Yarra Valley Classic: Daria Gavrilova, Danielle Collins post commanding 1R wins

Romanian Ana Bogdan made quick work of Russia’s Kamilla Rakhimova in their first-round meeting at the Yarra Valley Classic in Melbourne on Sunday. Bogdan claimed a 6-2, 6-2 victory and will play world no. 1 and the tournament top-seed Ashleigh Barty in the second round.

The Australian received a bye into the second round. Barty’s compatriot Daria Gavrilova also completed an easy victory over Viktoria Kuzmova of Slovakia. Gavrilova, who received a wildcard to play the event, dropped just two games to take home a 6-2, 6-0 win.

In the second round, Gavrilova will play fifth seed Serena Williams. Spain’s Aliona Bolsova ousted India’s Ankita Raina in their opener. Bolsova won in straight sets as well, 6-3, 6-0 beating the lone representative of the sub-continent in singles action currently, Down Under.

In the second round, Bolsova will take on 16th seed Marie Bouzkova.

Bouzkova defeated Australian Samantha Stosur in their first-round clash. The Czech was dominant throughout the match, prevailing 6-2, 6-0 without any fuss whatsoever.

Nina Stojanovic of Serbia got the better of Egypt’s Mayar Sherif in their opening round. Stojanovic won 6-3, 6-2. In the second round, Stojanovic will play the American 13th seed Danielle Collins. Collins won the first match of the day at the Yarra Valley Classic earlier in the day.

She beat Belgium’s Ysaline Bonaventure 6-3, 6-3. Another American Shelby Rogers also took her place in the second round. Rogers upset the 12th-seeded Italian Fiona Ferro 7-5, 6-2 in their first-round match. Rogers will play Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson in the second round.

Peterson defeated Australian wildcard Maddison Inglis in the first round 6-2, 6-1. Meanwhile, Rogers’ compatriot Madison Brengle didn’t fare all too well against Latvian Anastasija Sevastova in their first-round match-up.

Sevastova won in straight sets as well, 6-4, 6-2. Sevastova will take on either Misaki Doi or 11th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the next round. Two more Australian wildcard participants lost in the opening round of the Yarra Valley Classic.

Lizette Cabrera also bowed out to Russian Varvara Gracheva. Gracheva came from a set down to post a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory. Kimberly Birrell lost to German Mona Barthel in their opening-round match. Barthel won 7-5, 6-3. In the next round, Gracheva will play eighth seed Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic. Barthel will take on either 15th seed Kristina Mladenovic or Jessica Pegula in the second round.
